How Cold Affects Blood Sugar
Brown fat and glucose uptake: Activation of brown adipose tissue (BAT) requires glucose as fuel. Brown fat acts as a glucose sink – taking up sugar from the blood without insulin dependence.
GLUT4 transporters: Studies show cold exposure increases expression of GLUT4 – the proteins that transport glucose into cells – independently of insulin.
Key Safety Precautions
Cold water immersion for diabetics is not without risks:
Hypoglycaemia risk: Glucose uptake during/after cold water can lower blood sugar rapidly
Reduced foot sensation: Peripheral neuropathy makes it hard to feel how cold the body is
Always consult your doctor before starting cold water immersion if you have type 1 or type 2 diabetes.
